A provincial government in Canada has allowed its family court judges to sanction polygamous unions.
In both cases it was women who claimed to have multiple spouses (same time frame).
The provincial authorities told the men that the women had the legal right to have multiple spouses. The government created a unique legislation that says it is not unconstitutional nor illegal to have multiple spouses. The highest legal authority in that province is Don Morgan Justice Minster. He has said it is not necessary for people to become divorced to move onto new relationships that are marital in nature and law.

Robert Factum, thank you for the facts! This is the first time that I’ve heard anywhere that it is legal for women to have more than one spouse. It’s quite shocking to me. I’ve only heard it in an Anthropology course I had taken in college. I think it was the custom in some small tribes some place. I think it best for me not to comment any further. You know what I’m saying???

It is very difficult to examine rationally something so abhorant as “a wife with multiple husbands”, yet this comes up often when discussin polygamy with non-muslims. Yet if we, as muslims do not become familiar with the hikmah(wisdom) behind forbidding this enormity, we will be ill-prepared to deal with it when it come up. And it will come up!

Allah(ta ala) is the Creator of the nature of all things. He did not even ask the creation, what their nature should be. He simply said “kun fiya kun”(be and it became). It is man that attempts to “twist and distort this nature” to conform to their “perferted desires”.

The nature created in women is to “follow their man”. Please don’t panic, this is a true, yet unpopular reality. Even in the first western christian marital vows the words “honor and obey” were exclusive to the wive. And of course, let us not fail to mention Allah(ta ala)’s words;..”the believing women are obedient to their husbands” Holy Quran. There is no speech truer than that of ALlah(ta ala)’s. Of course it goes without saying that this “obedience” does not apply in the case of an unjust, foolish and misguided man.

Because she is “pre-disposed” to obedience, it is not possible for her to do so to multiple men. Each man would change the instructions given to her by the other man, just because it wasn’t him that gave them to her in the first place! This is the “nature” created in man. And chaos would reign! Allah knows best.

Secondly, man was created, for the most part, to be an intellectual being(though you sometime can’t tell) whereas woman was given an emotional emphasis to balance out the union. The one was made a degree over the other because of the responsibilities on him.

Man has to protect and maintain her. He has been ordered to defend her to the death, if necessary. And his last dime is best spent on her. These are the basic precepts of our deen. The prophet(peace and blessing be upon him) is reported to have said;” if Allah(ta ala)’s were to permit the bowing down to anything otherthan Him, it would be the wife bowing down before her husband, If Allah(ta ala) would allow such a thing.” This hadith is rated hadith hasan by Imam Bukhari. This is merely pointed out to show the degree of seriousness Allah(ta ala) places on the position of husband and wife. Allah knows best.

Please note that there was no mention of the sexual interactions between these spouses. This was purposefully done to demonstrate that that is EXACTLY what those who would promote multiple husbands have as their agenda. May Allah(ta ala) guide us all and keep us safe from the perils of ignorance.

Those who would promote multiple husbands fail to point out in their own scriptures where such a despicable thing was permitted. They tend to resort to their “own perverted logic” eliminating God and His messengers(peace and blessings be upon them all). When if it were not for the many messengers that came from God, the word God would not exist in their vocabulary, nor would marriages, nor husband and wife.

May you know the truth by its fruit.

Unfortunately we see this happen all to often these days. I recall reading where it was said these are people who have “itchy ears”.

They seek what they want. Not necessarily what God wants. They have their own play book suggesting what is and isn’t fair. But then they forget what the design is supposed to be. It’s like complaining to a painter that his creation is crap when it’s really a masterpiece!

It’s not the creation but how we treat and perceive it that’s flawed I think.
